Overview
Make a quilt block every day for a year.
I'll present a new quilt block, every day, for 365 days. Your challenge: To complete the blocks every day, and build a stunning 90" square sampler quilt.
All the blocks are rotary cut and machine pieced, using quick-piecing techniques. Most blocks will be either 3" or 6", but we are making a few in larger sizes, too. The project is suitable for confident beginners, and becomes progressively more complicated.
Here is a general layout of the quilt, from my initial EQ7 drawing in 2016. This gives you an idea of where we are heading so you can choose your colour scheme.
The fun is in not knowing which block you will get each day!
History of the 365 Challenge
In 2015, I had an idea for a challenge quilt for my local groups of friends. It was simple: make a quilt block every day for a year to build a sampler quilt. I thought maybe a dozen people would make the quilt. I created a Facebook page … and next thing I knew, quilters from all over the world were interested in my quilt!
Suddenly, I had to take this seriously, and write up proper patterns! Because I had subscribers from all over the world, I wanted to use diagrams in my patterns that downplayed the need for English. I was on a steep learning curve: I set up a website, learnt to draw diagrams in a word-processor, set up a mailing list, learned to use Facebook properly. All completely new to me.
I was 3 months ahead when the challenge started at midnight, New Year's Eve, 2016; but I soon got behind. Sometimes I was only a day ahead! I called for help, and the Amazing Pattern Testers were formed, an international group who let me get on with writing up patterns, while making sure there weren't mistakes. These wonderful people are: Charlott Sundahl from Sweden, Brenda Clough from the UK, Liliana Soli from Italy, Rebecca Jacobs from the USA, and Bronwyn Walker from Australia. I am forever grateful to them.
There are now multiple Facebook Groups; you can probably find one in your own language. At the end of 2019, there are over 30,000 subscribers … and the list is still growing!
